Final drives convert hydraulic travel-motor power into track movement. Because the final drive, travel motor and undercarriage influence each other, a buyer should not judge the system from one short travel video or fresh exterior paint.
Why Final Drive Inspection Matters
Final-drive repairs can involve parts, labour and machine downtime. A machine may still move while oil level, bearing wear, seal condition or internal contamination is deteriorating. Inspection should combine external checks, gear-oil evidence and a warm operating test.
Check the Housing and Seals
Inspect both final-drive housings for wet oil, heavy dirt stuck to oily areas, impact damage, loose or missing bolts and damaged drain or level plugs. Compare both sides. Cleaning before inspection is useful, but ask for photographs before and after cleaning if a leak is suspected.
Review Gear Oil Correctly
The machine should be parked safely on level ground and the plugs positioned according to the manufacturer procedure. Qualified personnel should remove plugs carefully because hot oil and internal pressure can cause injury. Check oil level, colour, odour, water contamination and visible metal. One oil sample cannot identify every fault, but burnt smell, milky oil or metallic debris deserves further diagnosis.
Do Not Confuse Final Drive and Travel Motor Leaks
Oil around the assembly may come from the planetary final drive, hydraulic travel motor, hoses, fittings or nearby components. Identify whether the fluid is gear oil or hydraulic oil and trace the highest wet point. Do not assume every leak requires the same repair.
Warm Travel Test
After warming the hydraulic system, travel forward and reverse, drive straight, turn both directions and counter-rotate. Repeat the test on firm, level ground when possible. Watch for pulling, delayed movement, weak travel, abnormal heat, grinding, knocking or one side stopping earlier than the other.
Compare Left and Right Temperature
A major temperature difference after the same test can be useful evidence, but temperature alone does not prove the cause. Load, brake drag, oil level, bearing condition, travel-motor performance and undercarriage resistance can all influence heat. Use temperature as one part of a wider diagnosis.
Inspect the Undercarriage at the Same Time
Over-tight tracks, seized rollers, damaged idlers and worn sprockets can increase travel load and imitate or accelerate final-drive problems. Photograph both complete track frames and check tension before blaming the travel motor or final drive.
Ask for Continuous Video Evidence
Request one continuous video showing cold start, warm-up, forward and reverse travel, straight tracking, turning, counter-rotation, stopping and the monitor. Continuous evidence is more useful than several short clips that omit the transition between tests.
Buyer Documentation Checklist
Record known leaks and unusual noises.
Record who checked the gear oil and how it was checked.
Request photographs of both housings and all plugs.
Request a warm travel and turning video.
Confirm promised repairs, included parts and test results in writing.
Reconfirm model, serial number, configuration, displayed hours, price and availability.
Important Safety Note
Final-drive plugs, raised machines and moving tracks can create serious hazards. Inspection and oil sampling should be performed by trained personnel using the correct service procedure, lockout controls and personal protective equipment.
