Why the hydraulic pump needs a complete test
The main hydraulic pump is one of the most important systems to evaluate before buying a used excavator. Slow movement, unusual noise or weak digging can indicate a pump problem, but the same symptoms may also come from low engine speed, incorrect hydraulic oil, blocked filters, relief-valve settings, internal cylinder leakage or control-system faults. A useful inspection therefore combines visual evidence, warm operation and several controlled function tests.
Start with a cold visual inspection
Before starting the engine, inspect the pump compartment, hoses, fittings and the area below the machine. Look for fresh oil, dust stuck to wet surfaces, cracked hoses, damaged clamps and signs that fittings have recently been disturbed. Check the hydraulic oil level using the machine manufacturer's procedure. Do not treat fresh paint as proof of mechanical condition.
Listen during start-up and warm-up
Start the machine safely and allow the hydraulic system to reach normal operating temperature. Listen for persistent whining, knocking or irregular vibration. Brief noise immediately after a cold start should be recorded, but diagnosis should be based on the complete test. Watch the hydraulic tank and connections for foaming, leakage or abnormal movement.
Test speed and combined functions
Operate the boom, arm and bucket separately, then combine functions such as boom-up with arm-in. Test swing, forward and reverse travel, steering and repeated stopping on firm ground. Compare response in both directions. A machine that performs one unloaded movement quickly may still lose speed when two functions demand flow at the same time.
Check performance after the oil is warm
Some wear becomes more obvious after the oil warms and viscosity decreases. Repeat the same movements after a consistent warm-up period. Note delay, drift, hesitation, changing engine sound and any difference between cold and warm response. Record a continuous video so the sequence can be reviewed instead of relying on short disconnected clips.
Pressure and case-drain testing
Pressure gauges and case-drain measurements can provide stronger evidence, but these tests must follow model-specific service information and be performed by qualified personnel. Correct test ports, oil temperature, engine speed and safety procedures matter. A single pressure number without test conditions is not reliable evidence.
Separate pump faults from other causes
Before condemning the pump, check engine performance, filters, oil condition, relief valves, pilot controls, cylinders and travel components. For example, one slow cylinder may have internal leakage while the main pump remains serviceable. Weak travel on one side may involve the travel motor, final drive or track resistance.
Questions buyers should ask
Can the seller provide one continuous cold-start and warm-operation video?
Were leaks, noises or slow functions observed during the inspection?
Was any pressure or case-drain test completed, and under what conditions?
Which repairs or included parts are written into the quotation?
Can the machine be inspected again before loading?
Use the evidence to make a purchasing decision
A hydraulic-pump inspection should produce a record, not a guess. Combine photographs, video, operating observations and qualified measurements. Buyers can also review our complete used excavator inspection checklist and browse used excavators available from YCHS Machinery.
