A used excavator can look clean while the undercarriage is approaching a major repair. Tracks, rollers, idlers and sprockets work as one system, so buyers should inspect both complete sides before comparing quotations or arranging export.
Inspect Both Sides as One System
Ask for full-side photos taken on level ground, plus close-ups of the track shoes, chain links, carrier rollers, bottom rollers, front idler, track tension and sprocket. Compare the left and right sides. Surface rust is often less important than cracks, bent shoes, loose bolts, leaks, irregular tension or different wear patterns between sides.
Track Shoes, Chains and Tension
Check shoe width, bent or cracked plates, loose bolts and excessive edge wear. Look at the links and pins for uneven wear. A track that is too tight can accelerate wear, while a loose track may indicate adjustment or component problems. If a seller states a wear percentage, ask what was measured and how the percentage was calculated.
Rollers and Idlers
Inspect carrier rollers and bottom rollers for oil leakage, flat spots, damaged flanges and abnormal play. Check whether the front idler runs in line with the chain. Uneven roller wear can make the machine travel roughly and may increase the cost of bringing the undercarriage back into balanced condition.
Sprocket Tooth Profile
Look at the tooth shape from the side. Sharp, hooked or uneven teeth usually show wear. Fresh paint does not restore the original tooth profile, so request clear close-up photos before shipment. Sprocket condition should be judged together with the chain because fitting one new part against heavily worn matching parts can shorten service life.
Warm Travel Test
A visual check is only the first step. Warm the machine, then travel forward and reverse, drive straight, turn in both directions and counter-rotate. Pulling to one side, hesitation, impact noises or grinding may point to undercarriage, final-drive, travel-motor or hydraulic issues. Ask for a continuous test video when you cannot inspect the machine in person.
Repair and Shipping Planning
Record the known undercarriage condition in the quotation or contract. List any included parts and promised repairs, and confirm the loading method before export. This makes the machine comparison more useful than judging paint alone and helps the buyer plan the first maintenance budget after arrival.

Request close-ups of shoes, chains, rollers, idlers and sprockets.
Ask how any wear percentage was measured.
Request a warm travel and turning video.
Confirm known leaks, cracks, loose bolts and promised repairs in writing.
