A used excavator can look strong during a short demonstration and still have hydraulic problems that only appear after the oil reaches operating temperature. For an overseas buyer, the safest approach is to request a structured test instead of relying on paint, sound alone, or a few fast boom movements.

Why hydraulic pumps must be tested with warm oil

Cold hydraulic oil is thicker. It can temporarily reduce internal leakage and make boom, arm and travel response appear stronger than it will be after sustained work. Ask the seller to start the machine from cold, record the dashboard before starting, and then continue the test until the hydraulic system is fully warm. A five-minute video is useful for identity, but it is not enough for hydraulic evaluation.

Begin with identity and a true cold start

Before the engine starts, the video should show the complete machine, serial plate, dashboard, engine compartment and the area around the main pump. A genuine cold start should show the exhaust, crank time and first idle. Listen for irregular knocking, sharp whine or repeated surging. One unusual sound does not prove pump failure, but it tells the buyer where a closer test is needed.

Listen for noise and watch response

At low and medium engine speed, operate boom raise, arm in and out, bucket curl, swing and both travel functions separately. Movement should begin predictably and remain smooth. Excessive delay, vibration, chatter or a high-pitched whine under load can come from several sources, including low oil level, restricted suction, aeration, a control issue or internal wear. Do not diagnose a pump from a video alone; use the symptoms to decide whether pressure and flow testing by a qualified technician is necessary.

Use a warm-oil functional test sequence

After warming the machine through repeated cycles, repeat the same movements and compare speed and sound. Then test combined functions such as boom raise with swing, arm movement with bucket curl, and travel while operating the attachment where the work area is safe. A large loss of speed after warming, weak combined movements, or a new noise under load deserves further investigation.

Check neutral behavior as well. The engine should not remain heavily loaded when the controls return to neutral. Watch whether the upper structure drifts, the boom or arm drops unusually quickly, or the machine struggles to travel on level ground. Drift can involve cylinders, valves or other components, so it should not automatically be blamed on the pump.

Pressure symptoms without guessing a diagnosis

A buyer can observe symptoms, but accurate pressure measurement requires the correct service points, gauges and specifications for the exact model. Ask for a professional test when the machine shows slow response on multiple circuits, power loss after warming, severe noise, excessive heat, or repeated stalling. Record engine speed and oil temperature during the test so the numbers have context. Never loosen a hydraulic fitting to “check pressure”; high-pressure oil can cause serious injury.

Inspect leaks, hoses and hydraulic oil condition

Photograph the main pump, valve area, hose connections, swing motor, travel motors and cylinder rods before and after the warm test. Fresh wet oil is more important than old dust staining. Look for damaged hose outer layers, sharp bends, rubbing points, loose clamps and oily dirt around fittings. Check hydraulic oil level using the manufacturer’s procedure. Milky oil may indicate water contamination, while foam or persistent bubbles can suggest aeration.

The cooler and radiator pack also matter. Blocked fins or damaged coolers can raise oil temperature and make a healthy system perform poorly. Request clear close-ups with the panels open, not only a cleaned exterior photograph.

Remote video evidence to request

  • One continuous cold-start clip with the dashboard and exhaust visible.

  • Close video of the pump area at idle and under load.

  • Separate and combined boom, arm, bucket, swing and travel functions.

  • The same functions repeated after the machine is warm.

  • Leak inspection immediately after the test.

  • Dashboard warnings and operating temperature shown clearly.

Buyer checklist before payment

Confirm the exact model, serial number, configuration and current condition. Match the video to the machine being quoted. Request recent photos of the undercarriage, work equipment, cab, engine and hydraulic components. If symptoms remain unclear, arrange an independent inspection or pressure test. Also confirm dismantling requirements, loading method and shipping dimensions before payment.
