Why the swing bearing deserves a separate inspection
The swing bearing connects the excavator upper structure to the undercarriage and carries changing loads while the machine rotates and digs. Wear, poor lubrication or damaged mounting areas can lead to movement, noise and costly repair. A short smooth swing video is useful, but it cannot replace a structured inspection.
Begin with a safe visual check
Park the machine on firm, level ground and follow the manufacturer's safety procedure. Inspect the bearing area, upper frame and carbody for cracks, damaged guards, loose or missing fasteners and fresh grease mixed with dirt. Look for areas that appear recently cleaned or painted and record them for closer review.
Inspect the grease condition
Check whether grease is distributed around the swing bearing according to the model's maintenance procedure. Dry areas, hardened contamination or obvious metal particles deserve attention. Excess grease outside the seal does not prove that the internal rolling surfaces are correctly lubricated.
Listen during controlled rotation
After the machine reaches a stable operating condition, rotate slowly in both directions. Listen for clicking, grinding, knocking or a repeating sound at the same position. Compare low-speed and normal-speed movement. Watch for hesitation, sudden stopping or a change in engine sound.
Check the swing brake and stopping behavior
Observe how the upper structure starts and stops in both directions on level ground. Excessive coast, abrupt engagement or inconsistent stopping should be recorded. Swing brake, hydraulic control and mechanical bearing problems can create different symptoms, so avoid diagnosing the bearing from one observation.
Evaluate vertical and rotational play
Qualified personnel can check movement at the bearing using the correct model procedure and suitable measuring equipment. The attachment position, ground condition and measurement points must be consistent. Do not use improvised lifting or place anyone in a crush zone. Compare any measurement with the manufacturer's service limit.
Separate bearing symptoms from hydraulic faults
Weak or slow swing may come from the swing motor, control valve, hydraulic pump, relief settings or engine performance. A repeating mechanical noise or measurable play suggests a different investigation. Combine visual, operational and measurement evidence before estimating repair work.
Record evidence before purchase
Photograph the bearing area, grease condition and visible fasteners.
Record continuous rotation in both directions.
Note the machine temperature and surface condition.
Record any noise at the same rotational position.
Put promised repairs and included parts in writing.
Use the result with the complete inspection
The swing bearing is only one part of the purchasing decision. Review the complete used excavator inspection checklist, the hydraulic pump inspection guide and our used excavator inventory.
