Used Excavator Inspection Checklist for Buyers

Buying a used excavator can reduce equipment costs and shorten delivery time, but the condition of two machines with the same model and year can be very different. A careful inspection helps buyers avoid unexpected repairs and choose a machine that fits the job.

This practical checklist explains what to inspect before buying a used excavator from China, whether you are considering a Caterpillar, Komatsu, Hitachi, Volvo, SANY, Kobelco, Doosan, Hyundai, Kubota, or XCMG machine.

1. Confirm the Model and Serial Number

Start by checking the model plate and serial number. Make sure the identification plate is clear and matches the machine documents. The exact model matters because engine type, hydraulic components, operating weight, bucket capacity, and spare-parts availability can vary between different production series.

Ask the supplier to provide clear photos or a video of the model plate. You should also confirm the manufacturing year, machine configuration, bucket size, track width, boom length, and any included attachments.

2. Check the Engine from a Cold Start

A cold start reveals more than a machine that has already been warmed up. Ask for a continuous video showing the engine before starting, the dashboard, the first start, and several minutes of operation.

• Check whether the engine starts quickly without excessive cranking.
• Look for abnormal blue, white, or heavy black exhaust smoke.
• Listen for knocking, irregular idle, or unusual vibration.
• Inspect the engine compartment for oil, fuel, and coolant leaks.
• Check the radiator, hoses, belts, oil level, and coolant condition.

Some black smoke under sudden heavy load can occur on older diesel equipment, but continuous smoke or unstable operation requires further inspection.

3. Inspect the Hydraulic System

The hydraulic system is one of the most important and expensive parts of an excavator. Operate the boom, arm, bucket, swing, and travel functions until the hydraulic oil reaches working temperature.

Movements should be smooth and responsive. Check every cylinder rod for scratches, rust, or oil leakage. Inspect hoses, fittings, the main pump area, control valve, swing motor, and travel motors. Slow movement, weak digging force, excessive noise, or overheating may indicate pump wear, internal leakage, or maintenance problems.

4. Test Swing and Travel Performance

Rotate the upper structure in both directions and listen for abnormal noise. Stop the swing operation and check for excessive free movement. Then drive the excavator forward and backward in both high and low speed.

The machine should travel straight on level ground. Test each track separately and, where conditions allow, perform a basic climbing or turning test. Weak travel on one side may indicate a travel motor, final drive, hydraulic, or undercarriage problem.

5. Measure Undercarriage Wear

The undercarriage can represent a major replacement cost. Inspect track shoes, chains, rollers, carrier rollers, idlers, and sprockets. Look for sharp sprocket teeth, loose track links, cracked shoes, damaged rollers, and uneven wear.

Ask for close-up photos from both sides. A seller should describe the remaining undercarriage condition honestly rather than relying only on a general percentage. For machines that will work on rock or uneven terrain, undercarriage condition is especially important.

6. Examine the Boom, Arm, Bucket, and Frame

Check the boom and arm carefully for cracks, welding repairs, deformation, and damaged pin areas. Inspect the bucket, teeth, linkage, pins, and bushings. Some wear is normal on a used excavator, but excessive movement can affect digging accuracy and create additional repair costs.

Also inspect the counterweight, upper frame, lower frame, track frame, and the area around the swing bearing. Structural repairs should be clearly disclosed and evaluated according to the machine's intended work.

7. Verify the Dashboard and Working Hours

The hour meter is useful, but it should not be the only basis for judging condition. Compare the displayed hours with wear on the pedals, joystick handles, seat, pins, bucket, engine, and hydraulic system. Ask for a dashboard video showing engine speed, coolant temperature, fuel level, warning lights, and operating hours.

A well-maintained machine with higher hours may be a better purchase than a poorly maintained machine showing unusually low hours.

8. Check the Cab and Electrical System

Test the monitor, lights, horn, wipers, air conditioner, safety lock lever, switches, and backup alarm where fitted. Check windows, mirrors, doors, seat belt, and cab mounts. These items are less expensive than major hydraulic components, but they affect safety and operator comfort.

9. Request a Complete Test Video

If you cannot inspect the machine in person, request one continuous video instead of only short edited clips. The video should include:

• A full walk-around and model plate.
• Cold engine start and exhaust condition.
• Dashboard and operating hours.
• All hydraulic functions working together.
• Swing, forward and reverse travel, and turning.
• Close-ups of the engine, pump, cylinders, and undercarriage.
• An actual digging or loading test when possible.

10. Confirm Shipping and Export Details

Before payment, confirm the final machine configuration, included parts, cleaning, loading method, export documents, destination port, and estimated shipping schedule. Ask whether the boom, bucket, cab, or counterweight must be removed for container loading and how those parts will be protected.

Do not choose a used excavator based only on the lowest price. Compare condition, model suitability, inspection evidence, parts availability, shipping cost, and supplier support. A transparent supplier should provide detailed photos, test videos, specifications, and clear answers before you make a decision.
