15 Questions to Ask Before Buying a Used Excavator Overseas

Good questions produce evidence, not promises

Buying a used excavator from another country requires more than asking whether the machine is in good condition. Strong questions identify the exact unit, expose missing information and define what the seller must provide before payment and shipment. Ask for written answers supported by dated photos, continuous video, documents and independent inspection where appropriate.

Machine identity and ownership

1. What is the complete model and serial number? Request a clear photo of the identification plate and stamped number where available.
2. Who legally owns the machine? The seller should explain its right to sell and provide the commercial documents required for export.
3. Does the serial number match every quotation and document? Resolve differences before making a payment.

Hours and service history

4. Are the displayed hours original? Ask whether the monitor or controller has been replaced.
5. Which service records are available? Useful records include dated invoices, maintenance sheets and oil-analysis reports linked to the machine.
6. Which major components have been repaired or replaced? Ask specifically about the engine, hydraulic pump, final drives, swing system and cylinders.

Condition and testing

7. Can you provide an uninterrupted cold-start video? It should show the monitor, exhaust and engine sound.
8. Can the machine be tested fully when warm? Request hydraulic, swing, travel and steering operation under safe conditions.
9. Are there active leaks, warning codes, cracks or welded repairs? Request close-up evidence instead of a general answer.
10. Can an independent inspector examine the machine? Agree on site access, test scope and who pays.

11. Which bucket and attachments are included? Record sizes, couplers, hydraulic lines and loose parts.
12. Which repairs will be completed before shipment? Put each promised repair and acceptance method in writing.

Price, shipping and documents

13. What exactly does the quoted price include? Confirm Incoterm, inland transport, dismantling, loading and port charges.
14. Which shipping method and dimensions are proposed? Verify weight and dimensions after any disassembly.
15. Which export and shipping documents will be supplied? Confirm the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and destination-specific requirements with your customs professional.

Create a written purchase record

Save the quotation, machine evidence, inspection report, repair commitments, payment instructions and final packing list together. If bank details change, verify them through an independently confirmed communication channel before sending funds.
