Used Excavator Swing Bearing Inspection Guide

The swing bearing, also called the slew ring, connects an excavator upper structure to its undercarriage. Wear in this area can create expensive repairs, so buyers should inspect it before relying on paint condition or a short operation video.

1. Check vertical movement

Park the machine on firm, level ground. With an experienced operator, place the bucket on the ground and carefully load and unload the front attachment. Observe the joint between the upper frame and carbody. Visible lifting or knocking deserves closer measurement. Camera angle can exaggerate movement, so a dial indicator and the manufacturer inspection procedure are preferable when the result affects a purchase decision.

2. Listen through a full rotation

Rotate the upper structure slowly in both directions. Listen for repeating knocks, grinding, binding or a change in speed. A single noise may come from the swing gearbox, pinion, hoses or loose guards rather than the bearing itself. Test after the hydraulic oil reaches operating temperature and record a continuous video.

3. Inspect grease and seals

Check the grease points, seal area and grease cavity. Dry areas, torn seals, contaminated grease or visible metal particles require investigation. Fresh grease alone does not prove proper maintenance. Ask how often the ring and swing pinion were lubricated.

4. Compare movement in several positions

Repeat the play check with the upper structure facing forward, to both sides and toward the rear. Localized wear may be more obvious in the machine’s most frequently used working position.

5. Separate bearing wear from other faults

Boom-foot pins, bucket linkage, track movement and a loose counterweight can create similar visual symptoms. Stabilize the machine and watch one joint at a time. If the source remains uncertain, arrange an independent inspection before payment.

Questions to ask before buying

• Can the seller provide a cold-start and continuous 360-degree rotation video?
• Is there any repair or replacement record for the swing bearing, swing motor or gearbox?
• Can close-up photos show the ring, mounting bolts, grease condition and surrounding frame?
• Will the machine be tested hot under load?

Include the result in the purchase decision

Excessive play does not automatically mean a machine cannot work, but the repair scope, local parts supply, labor and transport should be estimated before agreeing on price.
