Used Motor Grader for Sale from China: CAT 140H, XCMG and Export Guide

Release time: 2026-10-29

A motor grader is the machine that turns a rough cut into a road. Ministries of works, road contractors and mining haul-road crews across Africa and South America keep asking for used motor graders for sale from China because Shanghai yards hold both international brands (Caterpillar 140H, Volvo G730/G740) and Chinese models (XCMG GR-series, SANY STG, Shantui SG) at prices well below new. This guide explains how to choose a grader, what to check on video before paying a deposit, and how export from Shanghai usually works.

Which used grader fits your job?

  • Caterpillar 140H / 140 class: the reference machine for rural roads and haul-road maintenance. Mechanics in most countries already know it, parts are easy to source, and resale stays strong. See a live unit: Used Caterpillar 140H Motor Grader.
  • XCMG GR180 / GR215 / GR2153: good value for municipal and contractor fleets that want a newer machine with low hours for the money. Example: Used XCMG GR215 Motor Grader.
  • SANY STG190C-8 and Shantui SG16-3: lighter, simpler graders for road maintenance and site levelling, popular where budgets are tight. See Used SANY STG190C-8 and Used Shantui SG16-3.
  • Volvo G730 / G740: heavier blade and comfortable cab for long shifts on large road projects.

Inspection checklist before you pay a deposit

  1. Serial plate and hour meter in one continuous video, without cuts.
  2. Circle (turntable) and drawbar: ask the operator to rotate the blade fully both ways. Look for jerky movement, clunks or excessive play in the circle teeth and wear strips.
  3. Moldboard and cutting edges: check edge thickness, end bits and any cracks or weld repairs on the moldboard.
  4. Tandem drive and wheel leaning: listen for grinding in the tandems, check for oil leaks at the tandem housings and confirm front wheel lean works both directions.
  5. Articulation joint and steering: full-lock turns left and right; watch for slop in the pins.
  6. Transmission: drive through all forward and reverse gears on video. Slipping or delayed engagement is expensive to fix.
  7. Ripper or front blade (if fitted): cylinders should hold position without drifting.
  8. Cold start and blow-by: start the engine cold, then remove the oil filler cap at working temperature.
  9. Tyres: six matching tyres with usable tread save you a large bill on arrival.

Shipping a grader from Shanghai

Motor graders are long machines (often 8–9 m) and usually travel by RoRo or on a flat rack container rather than inside a standard 40HQ. RoRo is normally cheapest to West and East African ports and to South American Pacific and Atlantic ports with regular car-carrier calls. Flat rack suits destinations without RoRo service. Ask for both FOB Shanghai and CIF to your port so you can compare. Before shipping we photograph the machine, record the serial plate and prepare the commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading; your customs broker should confirm local import rules, age limits and any pre-shipment inspection your country requires.

Market notes for Africa and South America

In Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and Tanzania, the Caterpillar 140H remains the easiest grader to resell and service. In Peru, Chile, Bolivia and Colombia, mining and road contractors also buy XCMG and SANY graders for their lower entry price and newer year. Whichever brand you choose, budget for cutting edges, filters and a full fluid change on arrival.

Planning a road project that also needs compaction or loading? Our guides to importing machinery to Kenya, Ghana and South Africa and buying for Peru and Chile cover the paperwork side.
